Chestnut Oak

(Basket Oak, Rock Oak)

Quercus Prinus/Montana

A large, shade tree native to eastern USA growing atop the Appalachians in dry, rocky soil. Infrequently planted in New Brunswick. Attractive green leaves with rounded teeth and acorns that provide valuable food for local wildlife. Trees have both male and female flowers on the same tree and are wind pollinated but set seed better when more than one tree is present. Can produce hybrid seeds if planted near other oak species from white oak group. Develops a strong taproot that can make it tricky to transplant.
