Field Maple

(Hedge Maple)

Acer Campestre

A small, attractive shade tree with a low, dense canopy native to Europe. It can tolerate heavy pruning providing excellent privacy when pruned into a hedge. Insect pollinated male and female flowers occur on the same tree. Rarely planted in New Brunswick. Maple trees are ‘bleeders’ so prune them in the fall. If pruned in spring they will ooze sap continuously and in summer the sap will attract insects that can transmit disease through the wound. Some studies suggest this tree has invasive habits through reseeding. Should not be planted near extensive natural habitats where it could escape cultivation.
