Sugar Maple
(Hard Maple, Rock Maple)
Acer Saccharum
A large, long lived, abundant shade tree native to New Brunswick. Exceptional fall foliage display from bright yellow to burnt orange. The preferred tree for harvesting maple syrup. Seeds mature in fall and provide valuable food for local wildlife. The classic maple leaf shape that appears on the Canadian flag. Wind pollinated male and female flowers are on the same tree. Maple trees are ‘bleeders’ so prune them in the fall. If pruned in spring they will ooze sap continuously and in summer the sap will attract insects that can transmit disease through the wound.
