A compact, slow growing native of Europe suited to shaded areas. Rarely planted in New Brunswick. Attractive smooth, fluted bark and foliage that is dark-green and dense providing shade and privacy. This tree makes for an excellent privacy tree when older. Male and female flowers appear on the same tree and are wind pollinated. Relatively free from diseases and insect problems. The wood of the Hornbeam is extremely hard.
