Lombardy Poplar
Populus Nigra ‘Italica’
A male, genetic anomaly of the European Black Poplar that originated in Lombardy, northern Italy. A very fast growing, ornamental tree with low branches that grow parallel to the trunk creating a columnar form. It has been extensively cloned from cuttings and planted throughout the temperate climates of the globe as a privacy screen and wind break. A short-lived tree with attractive, triangular-shaped, shiny, dark green leaves and fragrant, sticky buds. Plant as a temporary solution away from sewer pipes and in conjunction with slower growing privacy trees as they tend to succumb to pests and diseases after a decade or two.
