White Oak
Quercus Alba
A wide spreading, long lived majestic shade tree native to central and eastern North America suited to parks and large gardens. Attractive foliage emerging pink in spring, maturing into dark-green, lobed leaves before putting on a display of red in fall. Acorns provide valuable food for local wildlife. Trees have both male and female flowers on the same tree and are wind pollinated but set seed better when more than one tree is present. Can produce hybrid seeds if planted near other oak species from white oak group. Roots resent disturbance from construction and compaction. Prune in late winter or early spring to avoid attracting insects to sap that may transmit pathogens.
